it's part of his story! he died - and now lives in a purgatory where his body is dead in the living world, but his soul wonders in the purgatory until his soul passes on. his companion and his murderer is a demon, who can pass through different dimensions (ie purgatory, heaven, hell, earth) and thus take over his body and invade his purgatory form as a result. If the demon possesses him, other demons can't sense him thus attack him for his soul. It's kind of complicated but that's the gist of it!
