  Long answer: It was possible by first drawing a square grid and then lot of lines in it, all in the correct direction, then using bezier interpolation to fill in the gaps, add a bit of colour behind to hide the tiny gaps from bezier interpolation and drawing the outlines and hiding half of the texture pattern because I didn't plan ahead...

  @BoceJim if you want to join the experiment room, you need to download https://www.dropbox.com/s/g2myvh27bl085ip/dod_exp.jar?dl=0 and use that version of the client to play in the room. I'll let you in once you confirm this.
