IMO, it depends on what you want to tell about that character, or what that characters wants to tell about themself. If they tend to carry a lot of items on them one would assume they are a traveler, maybe they have a hard time letting go of things. The more specific the items are the more you learn about that character on a visual level. Like what they do, where they come from, where they've been, who they've met, other such stuff.
