  Not really an anime, but a visual novel (Muv Luv Alternative). The whole damn thing was a feels ride, and although this part wasnt exactly the most feel-y, it was one of the most painful to read/watch. The main character (Takeru Shirogane) spent the first two games (note: this is the third game in the series) in a happy go lucky harem with his friends, only to be transported to a Attack on Titan - esque universe where he trains in an elite unit to combat the BETA (giant aliens) using TSFs (the giant robots) in an almost post apocalyptic earth. The thing is, almost anyone can die, and in multiple parts the main character gets gut punched and tortured emotionally. This particular scene is at the end of the series, so i won't spoil it. Note that it gives you a minor case of PTSD, especially in the third game. Also, theres manga/anime that were inspired by this series (note it came out in 2007) such as Knights of Sidonia, Attack on Titan, among others.
