"It was a dark and stormy night on the plains, and White Bird's tree was shaking like a root had come loose. The rain lashed down like tiny knives, and the wind blew right through him. He shivered in his nest and tried to sleep, but it was no use. With a crack, and an even bigger shake than he thought possible, White Bird was thrown from the nest, never to return. Blinking, he picked himself up and held his pounding head. But through his swimmy vision, he could see that the storm had cleared! Gosh, he must have hit his head on the way down... He looked around himself and saw the shattered debris of his nest that his mother had lovingly built for him just before she died... He wiped the tears away with his wing, and started to walk towards the horizon. White Bird's fall from grace and splendour wasn't the end, though. He felt fairly sure, for there was a feeling deep in his feathered breast, that this was only the beginning. He didn't know if you could ever get to the horizon - but he had the feeling it would be his home for a while yet."
